Morgan Smith
Baritone
American baritone Morgan Smith is renowned for his riveting dramatic portrayals and powerful voice. He has created 16 roles in world premieres, including Starbuck in Jake Heggie’s Moby-Dick. His performances in traditional repertoire include Escamillo (Carmen), Don Giovanni, Sharpless (Madama Butterfly), Count Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Four Villains (Les contes d’Hoffmann), and the title role of Eugene Onegin.
Morgan’s work as Richard in Kevin Puts’ The Hours has been heard in workshops with Cincinnati Opera and The Metropolitan Opera. Recent and upcoming engagements include the world premiere of Bodies on the Line with Oakland Symphony, David in a workshop of Gregory Spears’ The Righteous, a return to Jim in An American Dream with Hawaii Opera Theatre, All is Calm with Kentucky Opera, and Eugene Onegin with Opera Columbus.
Past highlights include performances with major companies such as Welsh National Opera (Dead Man Walking), Israeli Opera (The Passenger), and Seattle Opera (The (R)Evolution of Steve Jobs). He has also performed Tosca, La bohème, and Carmen with leading opera houses worldwide.
On the concert stage, Morgan has appeared with Dallas Symphony, Seattle Symphony, and San Antonio Symphony, among others, performing works by Bach, Brahms, Beethoven, Vaughan Williams, and Handel. He made his European debut at the Berliner Staatsoper and was a resident artist at Oper Leipzig. Fluent in German, he has collaborated with renowned conductors including Jaap van Zweden, Donald Runnicles, and Itzhak Perlman.

Youth Opera Project
Kentucky Opera’s Youth Opera Project engages young performers ages 8-18 in this after-school program. Students are immersed in a nurturing, professional-level theatre environment with supportive highly trained teaching artists. Youth Opera Project participants may be cast in ensemble or solo roles, and they are eligible for additional performing opportunities on Kentucky Opera’s professional stage and throughout the community.
