Acclaimed Philadelphia artist John Dowell felt called by his grandmother in a dream to travel to the cotton fields of South Carolina where his ancestors had likely been enslaved. Thus began an exploration that would take him on an unexpected journey using cotton as a metaphor for the Black Experience in America.
