The Hobbit

Opera by Dean Burry
Based on The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

Dean Burry’s adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy The Hobbit is the “children’s opera to rule them all.” Travel to mythical lands in this production starring the members of Kentucky Opera’s Youth Opera Project and Hobbit Camp.

Set on a playground in a kid’s backyard this reimagined and beloved classic explores the story in a non-literal interpretation. As our “Bilbo” and his friends play act and imagine the story of the hobbit, we are reminded about the power of believing in your imagination so much that everyone else plays along. In fact, no wizard, fairy or elf costumes are needed because everyday objects and clothes are made magical!

As an audience, not only are we swept along with the narrative, but Burry’s musical adaptation dives into intricate harmonies and rhythms that are educational for the performer and impressive. Additionally, through the story, we learn about the positive impacts of bravery on a community.
