Ariadne auf Naxos

Music by Richard Strauss
Libretto by Hugo von Hofmnannsthal

Sung in English and German with English Supertitles

Running time approximately 2 hours & 40 minutes

An unexpected mash up of traditional tragic opera and romantic farce in this dazzling opera-within-an-opera. A newly commissioned opera based on the myth of Ariadne is forced to perform simultaneously on the same stage as a rowdy troupe of Commedia dell’Arte performers. The result? Theatrical fireworks that will have you crying tears of tenderness and laughter.

Dead Man Walking

Music by Jake Heggie
Libretto by Terrence McNally
Based on the book by Sister Helen Prejean

This opera was commissioned by the San Francisco Opera

Sung in English with English Supertitles

Running time approximately 3 hours.
This opera contains adult subject matter and is intended for mature audiences.

One of the most performed contemporary American operas, Dead Man Walking explores the spiritual journey of a nun who advises a convicted killer on death row. From the composer of Three Decembers, Kentucky Opera presents Jake Heggie’s first opera, based on the best-selling book by Sister Helen Prejean, with a libretto by Tony®-Award winner Terrence McNally.

Exploring the complexity of redemption and forgiveness in the face of society’s demand for retribution, Dead Man Walking was made into an award-winning film in 1995 starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn. The Guardian (London) raves “Heggie is an unabashed melodist. His music is rich and emotionally charged, and carries enormous atmospheric power.”

“Figaro! Figaro! Figaro!” Even if you haven’t seen it live, you already know the music from cartoons and contemporary culture. Now is the time to experience Rossini’s rapid-fire masterpiece in person.

Determined to win the heart of the beautiful, strong-willed Rosina, Count Almaviva enlists the help of the barber Figaro to steal her away from her guardian, Dr. Bartolo.
