mc-kings-man-1Kentucky Opera would like to offer huge welcome to our newest MainStage Artist, Marco Cammarota. Marco has been with Kentucky Opera as a Studio Artist since 2013, and will make his MainStage premiere as Mitch in our production of André Previn’s A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. We invite you to get to know Marco, and to join us in wishing him what we know will be a long and successful career as a professional artist.

Marco began his journey to Kentucky Opera in high school, when he sang in Fiddler on the Roof and began taking voice lessons. Encouraged by his teachers, Marco pursued a collegiate music path, studying at SUNY Potsdam Crane School of Music, and eventually finding his way to opera. After graduating from SUNY, Marco pursued a graduated education at University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, receiving his master’s degree and Artist Diploma in 2011 and 2013, respectively. After graduation, he auditioned for Kentucky Opera’s highly competitive Studio Artist program.

“I had heard great things about the program from several colleagues,” says Marco, “and wanted to be involved with a company known for its support and positive environment.” Kentucky Opera was Marco’s first year-long program, and gave him many opportunities to expand and perfect his talent. “Kentucky opera is an extremely special place to me. They have seen me at both my best and worst and still love and respect me as an artist and young person trying to make it in this business.”

As a young person at the beginning of his career, Marco feels he can relate to younger audiences. “A big misconception is that opera is old, and therefore we can’t relate to it,” says Marco. “That’s simply not true!”

Marco goes on, “Younger audiences should not be afraid of opera… Opera is for the people. I think we get lost in all our preconceptions and forget that opera has all the same things we enjoy in our TV shows and movies. You know? Pagliacci is visceral and about love, deceit, murder, we get that on the news everyday…Come to the opera for the story.”

Marco’s first role as a MainStage Artist will be Mitch in A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. “Mitch means I can do what I’ve always wanted to do: express myself in the hopes of moving others to feel and express their own feelings,” says Marco. In preparation for the role, Marco has been watching the film versions of STREETCAR, which he says helped him develop his character. “I have loved watching both versions of the movie because I can see movement and style,” says Marco. “Also, the way the actors speak the lines informs me of how to sing the lines, even if the music, at times, suggests how to approach a sentence or thought.”

We hope you will join us for Marco’s MainStage debut as we premiere André Previn’s A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE on February 13 and 15, 2015.
