In a usual year, the summer is a busy time at Kentucky Opera building sets and costumes, scheduling community programs, and preparing for rehearsals. This is, as you know, quite an unusual year. In mid-March Kentucky Opera responded to the pandemic by suspending, indefinitely, our final production of the year, the youth opera Robin Hood, and all end-of-season fundraising and school activities. Now, we have had to make the difficult decision to reimagine our 20/21 season.
The pandemic has had a devastating impact on performing arts organizations and on the artists and artisans who rely on companies like Kentucky Opera for their livelihoods. Prior to announcing the Brown-Forman 20/21 Season in February, contracts with our artists and creative teams were already long secured. We are honoring the contracts with our artists to bring their skills and talents to you with a reimagined artistic season and school programs.
As part of the Kentucky Opera family, you know firsthand the power and importance of the arts in our community, especially during challenging times. Together we must protect the arts ecosystem that distinguishes our region, that offers children throughout Kentuckiana and the Commonwealth curriculum-aligned arts enrichment in their schools, and that thoughtfully and artfully connects people from all walks of life to build a compassionate and caring community. So now I am asking for your help.
Thanks to the Emerging Strong Fund created by our Board of Directors any donation over and above the amount of last year’s annual gift (and first-time donations!) will be matched, up to $150,000. Please consider doubling your impact and joining the Emerging Strong coalition to ensure that Kentucky Opera weathers this crisis and continues to fulfill our mission to serve our community. In addition, donors to the Emerging Strong Campaign will gain premier access to special events during the season.
Kentucky Opera will emerge strong from this crisis and continue to produce time proven masterpieces and exciting new works that engage our minds and hearts together. We remain committed to facing this unprecedented challenge with courage and creativity. With your support, we will return to the Brown Theatre as soon as possible, and we are already hard at work on securing our 21/22 season.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, and artists at Kentucky Opera, we are grateful for your generosity and support in keeping Kentucky Opera a strong and vibrant part of our community. I look forward to celebrating the thrilling and timeless fusion of music and story again with you soon.
With Warm Regards,
Barbara Lynne Jamison
