Things are heating up for our SHOW BOAT chorus as they enter the final days of rehearsal before opening night! Luckily, we were able to speak with one of our newer chorus members, Aundrey Ligon, Jr. to get his perspective on working with Kentucky Opera, music, and how singing has shaped his life.
Aundrey began singing in his church choir as a little boy, before joining the choir in both middle and high school. “I’ve been singing, literally, as long as I can remember,” says Aundrey. His love of music carried him to the theatre. His first professional job in college was with the Nashville Opera Association, performing LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR. “That’s still my favorite opera,” says Aundrey. “It has the most lush and memorable melodies as well.”
Since then, Aundrey has never failed to make singing a part of his life. “I’ve done shows with CenterStage at the Jewish Community Center, and I spend my summers performing with the Stephen Foster Story in Bardstown, Kentucky.” This spring, Aundrey will be going to Charleston, South Carolina to sing PORGY & BESS with the Spoleto Festival.
SHOW BOAT will be Aundrey’s second production with Kentucky Opera, his first being MACBETH earlier this year. “SHOW BOAT is one of my favorite shows in the musical theatre and operetta repertoire. I could do this show a hundred times,” says Aundrey.
“Everyone at Kentucky Opera is extremely talented, yet still very easy work with. They really make you feel at home. Everyone is so down to earth!” When he isn’t singing with Kentucky Opera, Aundrey teaches part time at Jefferson Community & Technical College, and works as a server & bartender.
